About Anykščiai

Anykščiai - a town established on both sides of Šventoji river valley and such a wonderful part of Lithuania, that the people who lived there created odes for it. Nature and history here have gathered so many impressive riches here that in fact a small part of the nation became like a park that can be easily seen by the naked eye, whilst it fits everything that Lithuania is attractive with. The only city in Lithuania, where trains still drive on the tracks that were built in the XIX c.

The Treetop Walking Path

The Treetops walking path, located in the famous Anykščiai Pinewood is the only treetop path in Eastern Europe. The path is in the level of the tree crowns and it lasts for 300 meters, evenly going up to 21 meters high. There are 13 stops on the treetop walking path which are assigned to feel the fascination of a famous A. Baranauskas written poem about the Anykščiai Pinewood: to see, to hear, to smell... The stops in the real spaces will help you to get to know and experience the variety of Lithuanian forests, to know and understand the importance of the Anykščiai Pinewood plants around the area. 

Kalita hill

It does not matter whether it is winter or summer, there is such a place in Lithuania where the fanatics of adrenaline and heights can meet. Kalita Hill situated in Anykščiai is a perfect place to experience something new, to get re-energised and have a good time. This hill also reminds of some historic times – it is said that once at the foothill there was a manor standing here, which belonged to the nobleman Nykštis which is associated with the story behind the name of the town Anykščiai.

Safari park

Fenced in 50 hectares of hills, woods and swamps, you will find more than 150 animals: free-ranged herons, black African ostriches, highland crawfish, and llamas. We invite you to look at the animal world from near and without any stalls, as if they were in freedom. Sit in an SUV, experience a full safari tour, and be sure to bring your incredible photos home.

Labyrinth Park

Labyrinth Park is the only this kind of park in Lithuania, and probably in the Baltic States.

This is a great way of entertainment for all ages. Here you can try out your luck and orientation skills.

The Labyrinth Park consists of three different willow labyrinths and a corn maze. “The big labyrinth”: Your aim is not to get lost and to walk through it all. “The Round labyrinth”: You need to find the center of the labyrinth and to find the exit. “The Race labyrinth”: Race your friend! The quickest wins!

Horse museum

The Horse Museum exhibits not only the agricultural tools and means of transport of the days of horses, but also unique exhibits of philately, warfare and wood carvings. The museum presents various crafts; the visitors can observe the work of a weaver, ceramicist and bread baker, also a blacksmith, jeweller and a wood carver. Outside, in the territory of the museum the visitors can enjoy themselves riding a horse in a horse-drawn carriage or a sleigh, or swinging on the swings.

Voruta mound

This, one of the largest and most spectacular mounds in Highlands, is surrounded by two deep valleys and streems and Vorelis and Volupis. Some historians believe that it is the place where King’s Mindaugas Voruta Castle used to stand. Today, it is the most widely studied mound in Lithuania, and one of the most studied mounds in Eastern Baltic region. In 1990 started archeological studies of the mound. Over the 11 seasons of studies revealed various findings including individual metal, boulder, pottery items, ceramic shards, approximately 1,000 animal bones, 51 pillar places, 3 burnt furnaces, residues of wooden fortifications, brass braided bracelet, crossbow arrowheads, work tools, ison and brass weights, clay pottery, silver cross pendant.

The Narrow Gauge Railway Museum

The Narrow-Gauge Railway Museum, established in the century-old complex of Anykščiai Railway Station exhibits Skoda locomotive Kukushka, other narrow-gauge rolling stocks and communication tools. Inside the Station there is the waiting hall and the office of the Chief of the Train Station of the Inter-War period in Lithuania. Visitors can try out some of the operating exhibits – the handcar and the railway tricycle.

Observation Tower in Bijeikiai

The 15-metre tower with an observation deck, built near Bijeikiai hillfort opens a magnificent panorama of Lake Rubikiai and its surroundings. On a clear day one can see the villages of Burbiškis and Mačionys, or the spires of Leliūnai and Debeikiai churches, towering in the distance.

Devil stone

"Purple evening"

The National "Bardų" Festival Purple Evening has been held in Anykščiai since 2008. Having received a lot of public interest and much sympathy, the festival naturally blended into the mosaic of cultural events in Anykščiai district. This festival not only represents the most prominent Lithuanian singers of singing poetry, gives the opportunity for young bards to perform, but also presents Anykščiai region as an attractive, unique cradle of poetry and creation. Thanks to this event, Anykščiai becomes a center of attraction every summer, uniting well-known bards and fans of their creation

Forest festival

On June 19-23, nature lovers gathered at the Second Forest Festival in Anyksciai Shillow to socialize, recover and be inspired. It was a community gathering, a kind of social experiment, where the event was co-created by everyone who came together. Set up on a meadow between the Holy River and the Puntukas Stone, the dwarfs and visitors came to discuss, create, study, travel along the forest paths, watch movies, play, dance, dine and party together at the fire.

"The adventure continues"

The family-friendly "Adventure Continues!" Festival will invite you this year to a two-day fiesta of literature, theater, sports, music, animation, virtual reality and summer entertainment. All festival events are free and open to everyone.
